Microsoft Announces Internet Explorer Is Officially Out Of Service Today
Browser is an application that cannot be avoided every day, not without reason because when someone wants to browse on the internet, that person must go through the browser first. One of the longest existing browsers is Internet Explorer which was released on August 16, 1995, approximately 27 years of Internet Explorer's operation. There has been a lot of talk and even memes about Internet Explorer since the past few years, this is because Internet Explorer is quite slow and cannot compete with its rivals such as chrome, mozilla, etc. Starting today June 15, 2022 Microsoft officially discontinues its classic browser (IE) Internet Explorer.
Signs of IE's demise have begun to appear since 2020. This browser will be discontinued from the Windows 10 version and users have been asked to start leaving it for the past 2 years. Since the announcement was made, IE has been widely abandoned and users have mostly switched to using Chrome or Mozilla.
Internet Explorer was abandoned by many users for several reasons such as the lack of attractive appearance of IE, the unavailability of personalias, and of course the main reason that resulted in many memes popping up related to IE is that it is slow even in the latest version. This discontinuation affects certain IE 11 desktop applications on Windows 10. Namely, those delivered via the Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) to systems running Windows 10 client SKUs (version 20H2 and later) and Windows 10 IoT (version 20H2 and later).
Quoted from Bleeping Computer, Microsoft will shut down internet explorer on Windows 7 ESU, Windows 8.1, and all versions of Windows 10 LTSC, IoT, and Server clients. In addition, Microsoft will disable the Internet Explorer desktop application on all its devices.
Internet Explorer is also not available in Windows 11. Microsoft is making the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge their default web browser. Meanwhile, Internet Explorer users will be redirected to Edge when launching IE 11
"The Internet Explorer (IE) 11 desktop application will end support for the Windows 10 line starting June 15, 2022," Microsoft said on the IE 11 page.
"For Internet Explorer 11 supported operating systems will continue to receive security updates and technical support to power the installed version of Windows," Microsoft continued to explain.
Not only Internet Exprorer, a series of other services owned by Microsoft have also died in recent years. These include Microsoft Teams Web App, Azure DevOps, Azure Web Portal, Microsoft 365 apps and services, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Microsoft Power Platform, My Suit of Products and Azure Virtual Desktop.
To enable IE mode in Edge, users should access edge://settings/defaultbrowser, then enable 'Allow sites to reload in Internet Explorer', and restart the web browser. In this 'Getting Started' guide, users can learn more about IE mode and how to move to Microsoft Edge. On the other hand, the Internet Explorer lethal injection is not considered a surprise to many users because Microsoft has been encouraging customers to move away from IE for years.
"Customers are encouraged to move to Microsoft Edge with IE mode. IE mode allows backward compatibility and will be supported at least until 2029," said Microsoft.
The company led by billionaire Bill Gates has also announced plans to retire Internet Explorer.
"We announce that the future of Internet Explorer in Windows 10 is Microsoft Edge. The desktop version of the Internet Explorer 11 application will be retired and no longer supported on June 15, 2022, for some versions of Windows 10," said Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager, May 2021.
It used to be one of the world's most champion web browsers. Some of its advantages were fast performance and good security because it was directly integrated with Windows.
Although widely abandoned, IE is reportedly still favored by business people because it supports certain frameworks such as ActiveX and VB support which are considered important for the operation of e-learning simulator applications, and web-based accounting programs.
To replace it, Microsoft Edge mode Internet Explorer also supports older versions of ActiveX.
