Let's Get To Know The White Spaces That Are The Hope For Rural Internet Access
Microsoft is developing a new technology, with this new technology from Microsoft the countryside will have the opportunity to have better internet access, so what is the new technology?
The new technology is called White Space, where White Spcae is the utilization of unused frequencies to be changed and reused into a wireless internet network or what we often call WiFi.
"White space is a new technology that utilizes empty frequencies, such as TV frequencies, without disturbing the TV frequency channel," said Microsoft Indonesia's Head of National Technology Tony Seno Hartono.
According to Tony, the TV frequency is at 2.4 GHz and the frequency can only reach up to 100 meters with one transmitter.
"But with the new technology, the frequency is lower at 50-700 MHz with a range of up to 3-4 kilometers so that one village can be connected to the internet with only one transmitter and utilize TV frequencies that have no channels," Tony added.
The new technology is expected to unite several scattered frequencies into one frequency, so that the unused frequency can be reused for wifi.
"White space can also release the use of frequencies if it turns out that the owner of the frequency, for example a TV station, has filled the frequency, our trials have been carried out for 2 years in the UK and so far we have not received any complaints from any TV station," Tony added.
This technology is predicted to be one of the solutions for rural internet, because there are relatively few TV stations in rural areas.
"However, the use of the frequency does require regulation from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, but this technology is cheaper than using WiMax," Tony added.
WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, which is a broadband wireless access (BWA) technology with high access speed and wide coverage.
According to data from the Ministry of Communication and Information, there are about 41 thousand villages that have telecommunications access, but there are still about 32 thousand villages that do not have it, and 32 thousand villages are targeted by the Universal Service Obligation (KPU) program which includes ringing villages, smart villages, sub-district Internet service centers (PLIK), and Mobil Pusat Layanan Internet Kecamatan (MPLIK).
In eastern Indonesia such as Maluku and Papua, the government claims that they have difficulty in establishing the KPU program, due to the difficult terrain and limited transportation facilities to reach the targeted villages.
