Google Introduces 'Passkey Authentication' for Passwordless Login
One of the tech giants, Google, has launched a new login method claimed to be much easier and safer than the previous method. So, what kind of new login method has been found by Google? How to use it?
As we already know, to log in to our Gmail/Google account, we must first type in the registered password. A secure password must be at least 12 characters long and contain a combination of letters (lowercase and uppercase), numbers, and symbols.
In their official blog, Google said, "For the first time, we're rolling out passkeys, the easiest and most secure way to log into apps and websites. A big step towards a future without passwords,".
WHAT IS PASSKEY
With this new way (Passkey), users still need to enter a password, but how this Passkey is applied differs from the previous password in Gmail. Passkey allows users to login in the same way as unlocking a smartphone. Users can choose the type of Passkeys consisting of:
- fingerprint scanner
- face scanner
- PIN code
Despite its convenience, Passkey's security level is higher than the old way of logging in using a password. Users no longer need to rely on pet names, birthdays, or "password123". And unlike passwords, Passkey is resistant to online attacks such as phishing, making it more secure than OTP via SMS.
Suppose users choose a Passkey type using a fingerprint or face scan. In that case, the Passkey's owner can reduce the probalility of system hacking or data leakage because each person has a unique fingerprint or face.
Meanwhile, if the user chooses to use a PIN code, users should consider not using a combination of numbers that are easy to guess, such as consecutive numbers (0000, 1234, etc.). The simpler a passkey is, the easier to think of your password. As a result, your account will be easier to hack or misuse by cybercriminals or hackers.
All Google users can already use this Passkey system. You can use Passkey to log in to all Google services (such as Gmail, Drive, Meet, and so on). To register for the passkey system, you can access the following link: g.co/passkeys.
This passkey service is not new. Apart from Google, other services such as Paypal, Shopify, Docusign, Kayak, and Yahoo in Japan have also implemented the passkey system. Starting May 03, 2023, the passkey feature will be available as an option for Google Account users who want to try the password-free login experience.
